Learning from the Past, Looking Towards the Future: Archaeological Ethics and the SAA

The Society for American Archaeology’s Ethics Committee has studied in detail the SAA’s Ethical Principles and has recommended to the Board of Directors that the SAA consider updating and revising them to reflect today’s standards and norms. The Board of Directors has appointed the second of several sequential Task Forces to gather input and feedback about the Ethical Principles[e1] . This forum will provide an opportunity for the Society’s members to engage in a discourse on what ethical concerns the membership wish to consider as part of the process of evaluating and revising its Ethical Principles. As with similar forums, the organizers will prepare a series of framing questions to begin the conversation and sustain it. The audience will also be encouraged to participate by contributing questions of their own.

Posters After Hours

The Posters After Hours session is back for 2019. This session will feature 200 posters. With a relaxed atmosphere and a cash bar, this session serves as the perfect venue to connect with colleagues and discuss current research.

All student attendees are invited to attend a reception hosted by SAA’s Board of Directors and SAA’s publishing partner, Cambridge University Press, in cooperation with the SAA Student Affairs Committee. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., meet SAA leadership, network with colleagues, and learn more about SAA. Enjoy some food, friends, and more. Don’t forget to pre-register for this free event!

15th Annual SAA Ethics Bowl

Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to organize a team of 3 to 5 participants with a faculty mentor to take part in the Annual SAA Ethics Bowl. Preliminary rounds begin at 7:30 a.m., with the final round taking place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. If your university is interested in participating in the event, please contact us at saaethicsbowl@gmail.com by January 31, 2019. All Ethics Bowl team members must be registered for the 84th Annual Meeting in order to participate.

Women’s Networking Reception

The Women in Archaeology Interest Group (WAIG) and the Committee on the Status of Women in Archaeology (COSWA) invite you to attend their annual Women’s Networking Reception. Come meet the COSWA board and mingle with fellow students and colleagues! The reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; the WAIG Business Meeting will follow from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Join SAA’s new Executive Director Oona Schmid and outgoing president Susan Chandler to find out what SAA has been up to over the past year; grab a drink from the cash bar to toast incoming president Joe Watkins and celebrate the SAA award and scholarship recipients in the Albuquerque Convention Center’s Kiva Auditorium from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Fourth Annual Teaching Slam

Join the Teaching Anthropology Interest Group (TAIG) at 7:00 p.m. for their brief general meeting and the Fourth Annual Teaching Slam! The Teaching Slam is inspired by the popular Three-Minute-Thesis competitions. Presenters will offer a three-minute lesson on an archaeological concept, with a focus on audience engagement. Join us for a fast-paced, fun-filled competition sure to inspire new teaching ideas for both new and seasoned archaeology teachers.
